Madera
Madera Trails

I don't have a name for this place yet - haven't really heard anyone refer to it by name, so I've dubbed it "Madera Trails" until I hear something better.

This place has 3-4 discrete riding areas and 5-6 tracks.  Also has several 20' 45-60 degree jumps, an oval, and a few kiddie areas.  This place is great for practice and families, but has plenty of places to get down too.  Just look out for the bees - on the far side of the riding area, there is a bee farm.

Update 3/17/2002

Thanks to some bozos who went out here, this site is now screwed for the rest of us who are law-abiding riders that don't abuse the privilege.  If you know who went out there and rode too close to the houses, and left their trash and shit (literally, which is what caused these complaints), make sure to thank them for being such dumb dildos.  By the way, check out the email after Sergeant Gauthier's picture/email below - looks like even though he says they "don't consider riders to be criminals", some of the cops don't necessarily act that way when encountering riders out here.  I guess it's OK for the Sheriff's dept. to ride, but not the rest of us.  "You will respect my authoritaaaay!":

Re:     Madera Trails

The area you refer to as "Madera Trails" is actually a part of the Lake Madera Subdivision. The area being used for the trails are subdivided tracks of land owned by out of county owners who do not often visit the cites. Because of this, and the fact that there were very few complaints, we have not been forced to take action. Our general stance is to leave the riders alone unless we receive complaints or they are vandalizing the area.

However we have in the last month received 11 complaints from home owners in the area, who are now pressing us to take action. The increase in complaints are likely due to an increase in the motorcycle traffic since this area was posted on your website.

Because this area is zoned residential it is a violation of Madera County Code 10.28.030 - Prohibition of off road vehicle operation in residential area.

Because we do not consider riders to be criminals and as a courtesy, we will be issuing a copy of the Madera County Code to riders contacted in this area until the end of March. As of April first riders found in the area will be issued a citation for violation of the above code.

Good luck and thanks for your cooperation.

Well, actualy one guy took a crap in the back yard of one of the owners houses near the creek. Several have gotten into arguments with the on site owners. But mostly the traffic has just increased so much that the people who live in the area are complaining. Will you please post something on your site regarding this area beeing closed. We are faxing the bike shops in the area also. I am trying to avoid anyone getting in trouble but they are still comming. I'll get that tire fixed right away, Thanks.

First of all,  let me tell what a great site this is.  What a great idea this is and very informative.  My situation is similar to yours in that I bought my bike and then thought, now what.  I grew up riding in the late 70's to late 80's and then didn't ride for about 12 years.  I am now 33 and decided to get back into riding.  I have a 2002 Honda CR125 and would like to ride it once in a while without having to travel out of the area code.  I remember riding in Kettleman City. What a great place that was to ride.  I think it has been closed for at least 10 years now.  It would be nice if there was a place similar to that out there somewhere.  Which brings me to the subject of the spot you call Madera Trails.  I first learned of this cool place to ride from a Madera resident who has been going out there for years.  I had been out there about five or six times.  It all came to an end today.  At about 11:00 Sunday morning I arrived and saw a man riding with his two sons.  I parked my truck and we started chatting.  About five minutes later I noticed a person riding towards us on a dual sport of some kind.  I thought it was just someone else who was going to ride but it turned out to be a sheriff on a bike.  He asked us for our ID's and ran the VIN numbers on our bikes. Basically acting like a D___!  To make a long story short he just gave us a warning but made us feel like we should feel so grateful for only that.  The problem I'm having with all this is that I know allot of people ride out there, and have been for years, including the people who told me about the place (the people who told me about this place referred to it as Dry Creek).  I guess it was just a fluke that a Sheriff was out there, but now I'm frustrated because I know I don't want to risk going out there again and being cited.  I live near the 99 off of Herndon and Polk and it doesn't take me long to get out to Madera.  I'm sorry I got so long winded but I thought I should send this e-mail to let you know that Madera Trails may not be as safe from harassment as you and also myself thought.  I use the word harassment because if you think about it, almost every place is owned by someone and if you are out to just ride recreationally and have a good time,  I think the police should just leave you alone unless they have had allot of legitimate complaints.  Now I'm worried that other places I go, I may encounter the same problem.  I could go on all night, but like I said I'm just frustrated.    By the way,  the man I met out at Madera Trails was the one who told me about your great site.  I believe he was also going to e-mail  you about the incident.  Thanks again for a great site.  I'm going to try some of the other riding areas listed.  Maybe I'll see you out there sometime.
